Two men, a 50-year-old from Begum Bazar and a 43-year-old from Gaddiannaram, lost ₹5,08,799 and ₹1,00,500 respectively in September after fraudsters tricked them into installing a malicious mobile application named RTO Challan.APK.Once installed, the app gave criminals remote access to their phones, enabling unauthorised debit transactions from their Central Bank of India and IndusInd Bank accounts, warned an officer from the Hyderabad cyber crimes police. The victims immediately blocked their accounts, alerted the 1930 cyber helpline and lodged complaints with the Cyber Crime Police Station. Investigators said the fraudsters exploited stolen OTPs and banking credentials to siphon off money.Police have warned the public against downloading suspicious APK files such as RTO Challan APK, PM Kisan APK or Court Order RTO APK, which are being circulated via SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram and social media. These files are designed to steal sensitive data including OTPs, SMS alerts and login details, enabling unauthorised online transactions.Officials urged citizens to only use apps from trusted platforms such as Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and to avoid clicking on links sent through unsolicited messages. In case of financial fraud, victims should immediately call the 1930 helpline or report through www.cybercrime.gov.in.The Cyber Crime Police further advised reporting emergencies of online frauds to 8712665171 on call or WhatsApp. Regular cyber safety updates are available on the department’s social media pages.
