The daily rehearsal for the elephant march, ahead of the Dasara procession began in Shivamogga on Thursday. Three elephants — Sagar, Bahaddur, and Balanna, marched through the streets of the city as part of the rehearsal.The elephants were brought to the city from the Sakrebailu elephant camp on Wednesday. MLA for Shivamogga S.N. Channabasappa and officers of the Shivamogga City Corporation greeted the jumbos with a grand welcome and offered prayers to them. The corporation has made arrangements for the elephants at Vasavi School.As part of the rehearsal, the elephants began their march at the Vasavi Circle on Thursday morning and reached Allama Prabhu Park via Gandhi Bazar, Shivappa Nayaka Circle, Ameer Ahmed Circle, Nehru Road, and Jail Road. Along the march, many people stopped to click pictures of the majestic elephants.Bullock cartsAnother event that captivated the residents of Shivamogga was a procession of bullock carts on the city streets as part of the Raitha Dasara. The procession of the decorated carts began at the Science Field on B.H. Road, after farmer Kamalla flagged it off. Mr. Channabasappa, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president H.R. Basavarajappa, and others were present.The procession culminated at Kuvempu Ranga Mandira, where a seminar was organised.Street playsThe students of DVS PU College staged a street play titled ‘Balya Jopana’ as part of the Ranga Dasara at different locations in the city on Thursday. The play, based on Thamate Jagadish’s script, was directed by Giridhar M. Dinnemane.The play intends to spread awareness among young minds on the ill-effects of smoking tobacco and consuming drugs, besides educating people against child marriage and how to handle cases of sexual abuse.
