Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Federal prosecutors have asked a judge to drop charges against a father accused of killing his three daughters, stating the U.S. Marshals Service told them Travis Decker was dead, according to reports.

The court documents seeking to have the charges dropped were reported on by CBS News and USA Today. Decker was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree kidnapping.

Last week, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office announced it had found human remains in a wooded area south of Leavenworth, Wash., that they believed to belong to Decker.

In a statement emailed to UPI on Wednesday, the sheriff's office said it was not in a position to comment on the court documents filed and was currently awaiting DNA test results from the remains.
