Vipul Parmar, alias Vimal alias Neel, who was arrested by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch on charges of robbery and murder on Tuesday (September 23, 2025), was killed in an exchange of fire near the Narmada canal on Wednesday(September 24), DGP Vikas Sahay told The Hindu. A police officer was injured in the incident, he said. He was rushed to a nearby hospital.Mr. Sahay said the encounter took place about 45 minutes (approximately 5.20 p.m.) earlier when the accused was taken to the crime scene for reconstruction. “Parmar allegedly snatched a firearm from a patrol team personnel and opened fire while attempting to escape. The police retaliated, leading to his death on spot,” the DGP confirmed. ‎Parmar, described by police and local media as a “psycho killer,” was arrested by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch from Rajkot in connection with multiple killings that had caused concern in parts of the city.He was later handed over to the Gandhinagar Local Crime Branch (LCB) late Tuesday night for further investigation. On Wednesday, Gandhinagar LCB officers, along with Adalaj police, took Parmar to a crime scene for reconstruction. Police said the arrest was linked to an attack on a young couple celebrating a birthday in their car near Ambhapur Narmada Canal on the night of September 19-20. The couple was approached by an unknown man attempting a robbery. When Vaibhav Manvani resisted, he was stabbed and killed, and the woman, Astha, was injured. She was admitted to a hospital for treatment.Surveillance footage helped identify Parmar as the suspect. Police deployed teams near his mother’s house in Ambhapur, his brother’s house in Naroda, in Kadara village of Dehgam, and in Rajkot to track him down.Investigators said Parmar had a history of attacking couples near canals, allegedly due to mental health issues linked to family conflicts and failed marriage attempts. He confessed to several crimes, including a 2019 attack near Adalaj that killed a young man and injured others. He is reportedly involved in at least 10 cases.
