Ministers are reviewing the use of taxis to take asylum seekers to hospital appointments, after it emerged that some trips are costing the taxpayer £600 a time.
Pat McFadden, the work and pensions secretary, told Times Radio that the Home Office was looking into the claims which emerged in a BBC report.
It found that a failed asylum seeker staying in a hotel used by the Home Office had been sent on a 250-mile taxi journey that cost £600 for a knee check-up.
