A Delhi court on Tuesday (September 23, 2025) declined an appeal by journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta and news portal Newslaundry, which had sought the transfer of a defamation case against them by Gautam Adani’s Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) to another court.
On September 6, a city court passed an ex parte injunction in a defamation suit filed by AEL restraining journalists from publishing allegedly defamatory material about the company. Following this, Mr. Thakurta, along with journalists Ravi Nair, Abir Dasgupta, Ayaskant Das, and Ayush Joshi, challenged the order.
While district judge Sunil Chaudhary, who heard Mr. Thakurta and Newslaundry’s appeals on September 17, declined their plea for an urgent hearing, district judge Ashish Aggarwal — who was assigned the petitions of the other journalists — set aside the injunction on September 18. Mr. Thakurta and Newslaundry sought their case to be transferred to Mr. Aggarwal’s court.

Mr. Chaudhary had, on September 22, said that it would be appropriate if the case were heard by Mr. Aggarwal since the latter had already dealt with and passed orders in the case. The matter was subsequently assigned to the court of principal district and sessions judge Gurvinder Pal Singh for review.
