Ragasa could become the strongest typhoon in the city’s history
The Hong Kong Observatory upgraded the storm warning to No 10 at 2.40am on Wednesday, exactly one hour after issuing the No 9 signal, with Super Typhoon Ragasa expected to bring hurricane-force winds with speeds of up to 230km/h (143mph).
The forecaster has warned the weather will be “persistently adverse” on Wednesday with frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms, while seas will be rough with swells and overtopping waves over the shoreline, which will be particularly significant along the eastern and southern coasts.
Ragasa will be closest to the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta on Wednesday morning and winds will further strengthen, it says.
The Observatory issued the No 8 signal at 2.20pm on Tuesday and the No 9 warning at 1.40am on Wednesday.
