What was announced on Sunday?
The Prime Minister said the UK has formally recognised the state of Palestine for the first time to keep the possibility of peace alive in the Middle East.
Why now?
The announcement was timed to coincide with the annual UN General Assembly in New York, where the leaders of other countries including France and Belgium are expected to follow suit.
The UN will hold a summit on Monday to revive the idea of a 'two-state solution', with Israel and Palestine co-existing within secure, recognised borders.
