The Road Traffic Accident Victim Assistance Centre, established under the leadership of Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Shankha Brata Bagchi, has received the SKOCH Award for outstanding public service. The award was presented to Visakhapatnam city police officials at the 102nd SKOCH Awards ceremony in New Delhi on September 20.

Mr. Bagchi said the centre, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, was set up in December 2024 at the City Police Commissioner’s office. Its primary objective is to provide immediate support to hit-and-run accident victims or their families until they receive government compensation.

Since April 1, 2022, ₹63.5 lakh has been disbursed to victims and their families through the General Insurance Council, Mumbai, while 106 applications are currently under inquiry.

The recognition of this initiative with the prestigious SKOCH Award has been widely welcomed by accident victims and their families.
