Newcastle kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 defeat at home to Barcelona on Thursday.

Marcus Rashford headed the Spanish side in front in the 58th minute before doubling their advantage with a screamer from the edge of the box nine minutes later.

Newcastle set up a tense ending when Anthony Gorden tucked away from close range in the 90th minute but Hansi Flick’s side were able to close out an impressive victory.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said playing Champions League football and then switching back to the Premier League is a “psychological issue rather than a physical issue”.
