In August, Vattenfall selected small modular reactors (SMRs) rather than large reactors for the new nuclear capacity planned at its Varo Peninsula site adjacent to its operating Ringhals plant, pending a final investment decision (FID) on the planned 1,500 megawatt project expected later this decade. The state-owned Swedish utility has narrowed its options down to Rolls-Royce SMR and GE Vernova, both of which have first-of-a-kind (FOAK) projects in the pipeline — in the UK and Canada, respectively. Vattenfall plans to take advantage of the generous new nuclear risk-sharing framework on offer from the Swedish government, and it is already eyeing a second 1,000 MW newbuild project at Ringhals itself, following the decommissioning of two shuttered reactors onsite. Desiree Comstedt, Vattenfall's vice president of new nuclear, spoke this month with Energy Intelligence's Grace Symes on the sidelines of the World Nuclear Symposium in London about Vattenfall's newbuild plans. Below is a transcript of their Sep. 5 conversation, combined with a follow-up Sep. 10 conversation, edited for clarity and length.
