City also braces for another storm, Ragasa, which is set to intensify into super typhoon over next few days
The No 3 typhoon signal issued by the Hong Kong Observatory will remain in force until 9am on Saturday, with Severe Tropical Storm Mitag making landfall over the coast of eastern Guangdong on Friday afternoon.
The signal went out at 9.20am and is set to remain in force until 9am the next day, with another cyclone expected to intensify into a super typhoon within the next few days.
Kindergarten classes and schools for children with physical and intellectual disabilities were suspended on Friday and would remain so on Saturday, due to the storm.
The Observatory said Mitag’s outer rainbands would bring a few squally showers, which would be heavy at times, and thunderstorms to the city.
