Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Washington, D.C, Mayor Muriel Bowser said that President Donald Trump's takeover of the district's police department has not helped lower crime.
Bowser, a Democrat, told members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that what helped was the increase in the presence of law enforcement backing the local Metropolitan Police Department.
"What has worked is not the National Guard in helping enhance [D.C. Metro Police Department] services. What has worked is more [Drug Enforcement Administration], more FBI," she told Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., a retired Army National Guard brigadier general.
Perry criticized Bowser for not calling the National Guard sooner, citing rising crime rates, though data from the Metro Police shows crime rates at the lowest they've been in 30 years.
