President Donald Trump on Monday lashed out with a fresh round of insults at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).
Omar, the first Somali-American Muslim woman elected to a U.S. state legislature, has faced conservative criticism in recent days for condemning past commentary of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, while also expressing horror over his assassination last week.
“I think she’s a disgraceful person, you know, I think she’s a disgraceful person, a loser,” Trump said of Omar during remarks to reporters in the Oval Office.
“It’s amazing the way people vote. I know it’s people from her area, maybe of the world, I don’t know,” the president added. “They got here and they vote her in. I don’t know. It’s hard to believe. But I think she’s a disgusting person.”
Trump’s comments drew backlash on social media, where many people highlighted his hypocrisy amid wider calls for political rhetoric to be toned down.
