The threat of thunderstorms, gales, and violent lightning led to the cancellation of the final day of SailGP competition in Saint-Tropez.
Great Britain’s winning performance from Friday’s four races, held in bright sunshine and warm gusty breeze, earned driver Dylan Fletcher and his team their second victory of the season. It has also left other teams gnashing their teeth at missed opportunities, although they also know this is the nature of a weather-dependent sport like sailing.
New Zealand were frustrated to miss the chance of closing their one-point deficit on Great Britain. “I felt like we could have saved a lot of points out there,” Kiwi skipper Pete Burling told The Athletic. “In the first and last races we had two incidents where we lost a couple of places. So, a bit frustrated, although I felt like we sailed really, really well.”
