Baroness May has opposed the “licence to kill” bill during a debate on assisted dying in the House of Lords.
The former prime minister, who is leading opposition to the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill during its second reading in the Lords, said the legislation “effectively says suicide is OK”.
A record number of peers are set to take part in a two-day debate on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill for the first time.
The legislation would make assisted dying available to adults in England and Wales with a terminal diagnosis of less than six months to live.
Lady May said: “I do not believe the safeguards in the Bill will prevent people from being pressurised to end their lives, sometimes for the benefit of others.”
