Caleb Williams’ gray undershirt: What does NFL rulebook say about it?

When Richard Sherman watched Monday night’s game between the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams’ unique outfit caught his attention.

“This shirt Caleb Williams has on under his pads is odd,” Sherman, the former All-Pro cornerback and current Amazon Prime analyst, posted on X. “I’m not sure the thought process with his SWAG today but hey he’s playing well so it works.”

And Sherman wasn’t the only one who took notice. Regardless of how Williams played — or how aesthetically pleasing (or displeasing) his uniform was — there is a question of how legal Williams’ look is. An NFL spokesperson sent a one-sentence reply to questions from The Athletic: “There’s no violation here.” However, according to the NFL rulebook, it seems Williams’ gray tee exists in, at least, a gray area.
