Newcastle United have cancelled 45 tickets for their massively oversubscribed Champions League home clash with Barcelona after they were purchased by a school in Dundee, Scotland, 190 miles away, and they will be put on sale to supporters.

More than 110,000 Newcastle fans found themselves in an online queue on Monday for a scarce number of member-sale tickets to the match against the Spanish champions at the 52,300-capacity St James’ Park, which is due to take place on Thursday, September 18 at 8pm. When it emerged that the High School of Dundee had received such a large volume of tickets, it caused uproar.

Having returned to the Champions League following a one-season absence — Newcastle played in the competition in 2023-24 after a 20-year hiatus — there has been huge demand for tickets to their opening game of the 2025-26 tournament against Barcelona, who the club famously beat 3-2 on Tyneside in September 1997, when Faustino Asprilla scored a hat-trick.

The Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) said they had been “inundated with messages” from outraged supporters after a social-media post from the High School of Dundee, which is in Scotland and is located almost 200 miles north of Tyneside, confirmed that they “have been offered an incredible experience of attending Newcastle v Barcelona in the Champions League”.
