Labour MPs' use of AI-powered ChatGPT to write their speeches has turned the House of Commons into an 'absurd' place, a senior Tory has warned.
Tom Tugendhat, the former security minister, hit out at 'ChatGPT-generated press releases' being read out from the Labour benches during a debate this week.
He said that Labour MPs were clearly using the chatbot because their contributions in the Commons chamber included phrases such as 'I rise to speak'.
The Tonbridge MP added this was 'an Americanism that we do not use'.
A search of Hansard, the official record of parliamentary debates, reveals a spike in the use of the phrase 'I rise to speak' by MPs and peers over the past year.
