A 56-year-old Portuguese man faking a disability has been jailed for almost seven years after attempting to smuggle almost £1million worth of cocaine into the United Kingdom in a mobility scooter.
Able-bodied Casimiro De Lemos Francisco was stopped by Border Force officers while riding his electric wheelchair through Manchester Airport on March 30 after arriving from Bridgetown, Barbados.
Border Force officers discovered 11 packages of cocaine weighting up to 12 kilos hidden in the backrest of his wheelchair.
The class A drug had a street value of £880,000.
De Lemos Francisco, from Guimaraes in the north of Portugal appeared in the Manchester Crown Court last week where he admitted to smuggling the class A drug into the UK.
