A British businessman accused of spying for China and his ‘handler’ have escaped from house arrest in Serbia after removing their electronic tags.
John Miller was the subject of an FBI sting operation when he was arrested with Cui Guanghai in Belgrade in April just hours before they were due to fly to Beijing.
The pair, accused of trying to buy weapons and sensitive military technology in the United States for the People's Liberation Army, were under house arrest as they awaited extradition to America.
They were in two separate rented flats in the Serbian capital, wearing electronic bracelets and unable to leave their respective properties as part of court-imposed measures.
But Miller and Cui managed to escape and successfully remove their surveillance tags, according to a statement from the Belgrade Higher Court seen by the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network.
