Peter Mandelson will play a full role in Donald Trump’s state visit next week, despite mounting questions about his past association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Downing Street yesterday dismissed suggestions that Lord Mandelson could be asked to stay away to avoid embarrassment to the Government and Royal Family, who will host the US President during his two-day stay.

The PM’s official spokesman said the embattled ambassador ‘will obviously be represented at the state visit, as you would expect’.

Whitehall sources said Lord Mandelson has played a key role in coordinating the details of next week’s summit with the White House and Buckingham Palace.

He is expected to attend a state dinner thrown by the King in President Trump’s honour at Windsor castle.
