Three students were shot at a Colorado high school and are in critical condition, law enforcement officials said.
At around 12:24 p.m. local time on Sept. 10, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office received its first call of a shooting on the grounds of Evergreen High School, located about 30 miles southwest of Denver, according to Jacki Kelley, a sheriff's spokesperson. Hundreds of police responded to the shooting, which included a student allegedly wielding a handgun, Kelley said in a news briefing.
Kelley said it didn't appear officers fired any rounds. The high school, which serves more than 900 students, was declared safe by law enforcement after a brief lockdown, she said.
"There is no active threat to the community or to our students anymore," she told reporters.
The alleged shooter and two students were transported to St. Anthony's Hospital, in Lakewood, where they are in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said.
