The deputy Labour leadership contest should be postponed, Lord Blunkett has said.

The Labour peer and former home secretary called for the race to succeed Angela Rayner to be put on hold while a “full review” of the role took place.

Six candidates are hoping to succeed Ms Rayner and the first nominations tally on Tuesday night showed Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, is currently in the lead.

Lucy Powell, the Leader of the Commons, has 35 nominations, while the remaining four hopefuls, including Dame Emily Thornberry, all have fewer than ten.

Lord Blunkett told the BBC’s Newsnight: “Well my reaction on Sunday night, and I did ring up people and say: ‘Couldn’t we get out of this? Can’t we actually postpone?’
