Plan to use reaction tests and driving simulators to evaluate drivers’ responsiveness follows series of crashes involving elderly cabbies

Hong Kong transport authorities will use artificial intelligence (AI) to assess the fitness of elderly professional drivers in a trial set to start later this year, aiming to enhance the reliability of tests for older motorists.

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan told the Legislative Council on Wednesday that the medical assessment trial would be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, with the transport trade and doctors set to gather feedback.

“We will invite members of the commercial vehicle industry to participate in the medical assessment trials ahead of schedule during the fourth quarter of this year,” Chan said.

She also said that the improved assessment was expected to be launched in the second quarter of the following year.
