Officers patrolling French beaches lack training and proper equipment, a police leader has said, despite hundreds of millions of British taxpayers' pounds being handed over to France.

Marc Alegre of the Unité police union, which represents officers in Calais and Dunkirk, said cash had been spent on the wrong type of vehicles.

And officers allocated to the beach patrols from other parts of the country lacked training to do the job effectively.

Mr Alegre expressed fears about officers' lives being put at risk by extreme violence from migrants and traffickers.

He said his organisation was pressing the French government to set up specialised police units instead.
