A drunken lout who forced a plane to turn around after just eight minutes in the air when he proposed to an air stewardess and almost sparked a 'mass brawl' is facing jail.

Matthew Taylor, 30, pleaded guilty to being drunk when he boarded an Alicante-bound Jet2 flight which was packed with families and holidaymakers on August 18.

He now faces two-and-a-half years behind bars as well as a hefty fine.

Leeds Magistrates' heard today how booze-fuelled Taylor immediately caught the attention of cabin crew when he asked senior stewardess Brooke Crossley to marry him as he stumbled onto the plane.

Prosecutor Sarah Quirie said Taylor then gave Ms Crossley a 'high five' after the failed proposal before making his way down the aircraft to his seat.
