An emergency alert system which hit millions of phones across the UK has been ridiculed by Britons for being late.

Despite health and privacy concerns, mobiles connected to 4G and 5G networks throughout Britain blared a siren-like alarm, vibrated and displayed a warning message for ten seconds.

It was the first test of its kind since 2023, and had faced scrutiny from experts who warned it could damage people's health, invade privacy and put victims of abuse at risk.

Fans at sporting events throughout the country were spotted in the stands looking down at their phones as the alerts rang out, with broadcast presenters live on air also reacting live as it happened.

Hailing the public for 'taking part' in the alert, Labour MP Darren Jones the move will 'help the government keep the country safe 24 hours a day, 365 days a year'.
