Construction of a new bridge across River Cauvery, connecting Srirangam and Tiruchi city, will be completed in February, 2026, according to Minister for Highways E.V. Velu.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the construction work near Mambazha Salai in Tiruchi, along with Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru, Collector V. Saravanan, Mr. Velu said the State Highways Department had been following the practice of completing the projects before the stipulated time frame. Construction of a new bridge across the Cauvery River in Tiruchi was going well. The Mettur dam had reached its maximum level six times during the current year alone. Continuos flow of water was being maintained since June, thereby causing challenges to the construction work. However, all necessary steps had been taken to expedite the work. It would be completed before February 15, 2026.
Mr. Velu said the State Highways Department had taken steps for acquiring lands at Melachinthamani and other required places. The Tiruchi district administration had been extending full cooperation for the land acquisition and other works. Eighty out of 120 piles had been erected. Nearly 59% of work had been completed.
The bridge was sanctioned at an estimate of ₹106 crore in the State Budget for 2024-25 and is being built adjacent to the existing bridge. The existing bridge would be retained to cater to traffic coming from Mambazha Salai, while the new one would be for vehicles going in the opposite direction.
