Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski fell agonisingly short of becoming the first all-British men’s doubles pair to win the US Open for more than a century.

Despite having three championship points, Salisbury and Skupski succumbed to the same fate they had in the French Open - and to the same pair - losing 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 to Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.

The last all-British men’s duo to lift the trophy, pre-dates the tournament. When known as the US National Championships, brothers Reginald and Laurence Doherty won in 1902 and 1903, and the last all-British pair to reach the final were Mike Sangster and Graham Stilwell in 1964.

For Skupski, the wait to win a grand slam outside of the UK will go on, while Salisbury was unable to add to the three US Open trophies he already has - of which one came against Skupski.

After an even first two sets, the British duo would be left to rue what could have been in front of a healthy crowd that almost filled the lower bowl on Arthur Ashe.
