Father Ted creator Graham Linehan has said he may never return to Britain because there is 'no freedom of speech in this country' following his arrest over a series of anti-trans tweets.

The Irish comedy writer, 57, was swooped on by armed police when he touched down at Heathrow Airport on Monday from Arizona, United States, and he was detained on suspicion of inciting violence.

His arrest was met with fury from high-profile figures such as JK Rowling who branded it 'utterly deplorable' and Piers Morgan who said it was 'absolutely ridiculous'.

Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick also labelled it 'a complete waste of police time' as he called on the force to 'go after actual criminals'.

It led Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley to say his officers should not be 'policing toxic culture wars debates' and that they had been left in an impossible position implementing the law as it stands.
