Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Government is not in crisis, a minister has insisted.

Darren Jones, the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, rejected the suggestion that the Government was “in crisis” after Sir Keir launched a major reshuffle of the Cabinet following Angela Rayner’s resignation.

“The fact is the Prime Minister had been planning to do a reshuffle on a slightly slower timetable and had started to think about putting the ministers he wanted in the places to really drive on delivering reform in line with the public’s priorities,” he told Sky News.

“That was accelerated and brought forward as a consequence of the former deputy prime minister resigning.”

The reshuffle is expected to continue on Saturday with junior ministers facing the sack. On Friday, Sir Keir moved 12 ministers, including Yvette Cooper, David Lammy and Shabana Mahmood, and ousted two others.
