A son has described the 'nightmare' of finding his elderly housebound mother drowned at her home during Storm Babet and called for more cash to be spent on flood defences.
Grandmother Maureen Gilbert, 83, lived in Tapton Terrace in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, for her whole life until she died on October 21, 2023 when the River Rother burst its banks and flooded her home.
She was one of seven people to die during the storm and was found 'floating in the water' at her home by her son Paul.
On Friday assistant coroner Matthew Kewley gave a short narrative conclusion to an inquest into her death at Chesterfield Coroner's Court, and found there is still a risk to life in Tapton Terrace.
The inquest heard that Mrs Gilbert had health conditions and slept in her lounge downstairs for years before her death, but could get upstairs if she needed to.
