The Wall Street Journal on Thursday blasted President Donald Trump over his escalating fight with Harvard University, cautioning how his “brass-knuckle tactics” could ultimately backfire on both him and conservatives.
A federal judge ruled this week that the Trump administration unlawfully canceled more than $2 billion in grants and contracts to the university after Harvard refused to comply with White House demands.
The newspaper’s conservative editorial board ― now a regular thorn in the president’s side ― suggested it could be “a Pyrrhic victory” because Trump “seems willing to keep using and sometimes abusing government power to punish the school if it won’t unconditionally surrender.”
The board argued that Trump’s “brass-knuckle tactics are doing damage to the rule of law and the First Amendment.” But instead of taking “his legal loss as a hint,” the Journal warned, Trump may “see crimson and do worse.”
