Voters in Angela Rayner's Greater Manchester constituency yesterday claimed 'the trust was gone' after the deputy prime minister admitted underpaying stamp duty by £40,000.
A number of constituents in Ashton-under-Lyne, where she was re-elected last year with a majority of almost 11,000, called on the Labour MP to resign.
Ms Rayner has already faced questions over how she can properly represent the area if she is spending a significant proportion of her time at her recently-purchased property hundreds of miles away in Hove, East Sussex.
Speaking to the Mail on Thursday, constituents told how they believed the politician would have to leave her post.
Just hours later at Friday lunchtime it was announced today that she had resigned, after the outcome of an ethics watchdog report found she had failed to upkeep the 'highest standards' expected of MPs.
