Israelis placed loaves of pita, the flat Middle Eastern bread, in front of Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman's house in a symbolic call for a hostage deal and Gaza cease-fire.
The installation reads "700 Days of Abandonment," as Friday marks 700 days since October 7, 2023. The minister's husband, Shmulik Silman, came out of his house and confronted the protesters.
The far-right lawmaker has repeatedly called for Israeli hospitals during Passover to enforce a ban on leavened bread products – which Jewish law prohibits from eating during the holiday – with searches of patients' bags. The stance led to a 2023 law.
"Idit Silman, who was so concerned about [bread] in hospitals, continues to abandon hostages starving in Gaza," the protesters said in the statement. "[She] supports sacrificing our soldiers in a politically motivated war."
