Angela Rayner has “fair questions” to answer, a minister has admitted as her lawyers claimed they did not give her tax advice.

The conveyancing firm that handled the purchase of the Deputy Prime Minister’s £800,000 flat in Hove, East Sussex, insisted on Thursday night that it had done nothing wrong.

The disclosure by The Telegraph piled further pressure on Ms Rayner ahead of a major report into her actions by the ethics watchdog, expected to be published later on Friday.

Sir Keir Starmer will then decide the political future of his right-hand woman.

Asked about the latest revelations, Douglas Alexander, a trade minister, told Times Radio: “Well, these are fair questions, indeed good questions, but they’re questions for Sir Laurie Magnus, the independent adviser on ministerial standards.
