The wife of a headteacher who killed herself because of homophobic abuse has said: 'I don't want her to have left for nothing.'

Frenchwoman Caroline Grandjean, 42, ended her life on Monday after jumping off a cliff near her hometown of Anglards-de-Salers, in the Cantal department.

She had phoned France's national suicide helpline hours before, complaining of harassment and death threats at the Infant School in Moussages, a village with a population of 300 people.

And on Thursday, Ms Grandjean's wife, Christine Paccoud, paid tribute to her beloved partner.

Saying she hoped the tragedy raised the problems gay people still face, Ms Paccoud told French Television: 'I don't want her to have left for nothing. We loved each other like crazy.
