At 6.05pm on Wednesday, Lisbon's iconic Elevador da Glória funicular was making its descent down its steep route towards the city centre.
Within moments, a cable snapped, forcing the streetcar off its rails before it slammed into a hotel corner building.
Seventeen people have now died as a result of the accident, with 21 suffering injuries including a three-year-old child.
Among the victims was André Marques, a brakeman working for Carris, with at least 11 foreign nationals injured.
Describing harrowing scenes, witnesses said the streetcar came careening down its 850ft course before coming off the tracks on the curved Rua da Gloria just after 6pm.
