A Polish gun smuggler who was caught with 61 firearms at the Port of Dover claimed he was coming to the UK for a christening.

Eryk Maruisz Kiler, 44, confessed to trying to bring the guns into the UK and was jailed for nine years at Cantebury Crown Court on Monday.

On May 15, he was arrested after being stopped by Border Force officers from entering the country.

Following a search of his Renault Scenic, a huge haul of self-loading pistols were hidden in the voids of the flooring, triggering a National Crime Agency (NCA) probe.

When initially questioned by officers, Kiler claimed he was coming to the UK for a christening.
