Angela Rayner’s political future hangs in the balance as the investigation into her tax affairs could conclude as soon as today.
The Deputy Prime Minister referred herself to Sir Laurie Magnus, Sir Keir Starmer’s independent adviser on ministerial interests, after admitting on Wednesday she failed to pay a £40,000 tax bill on the purchase of her seaside holiday home.
Ms Rayner – who is facing growing pressure to quit – triggered the inquiry days after The Telegraph first disclosed that she had avoided the extra stamp duty normally applied on a second home.
The Telegraph understands that Sir Laurie could conclude his investigation as soon as today.
It came as Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, repeatedly declined to say whether her Cabinet colleague should stay on as Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary.
