Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United to keep faith with beleaguered head coach Ruben Amorim, and said Ralf Rangnick’s warning that the club needed open-heart surgery was growing more prescient with every setback.
Appointed in November last year, Amorim has failed to inspire an upturn after United chiefs ran out of patience with predecessor Erik ten Hag. Former interim boss Rangnick issued his verdict on the 20-times English champions’ ills back in April 2022.
Amorim’s 10-month reign plumbed new depths with a Carabao Cup humiliation by League Two Grimsby Town last week, although a late 3-2 victory over Burnley on Saturday earned the Portuguese some breathing space.
