Sept. 3 (UPI) -- The U.S. government announced Wednesday it has sanctioned a Chinese company for brewing synthetic opioids and related substances to be sold to Americans.
"Today, the United States is sanctioning Chinese chemical company [Guangzhou Tengyue Chemical Co., Ltd.] and two of the company's representatives, Huang Xiaojun and Huang Zhanpeng, for manufacturing and coordinating shipments of illicit opioids and chemical agents to the United States," said U.S. State Department deputy spokesperson Thomas Pigott in a press release.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC, said in a press release that it has penalized Guangzhou Tengyue Chemical Co. Ltd. that allegedly is involved in the manufacture and sale of synthetic opioids.
Guangzhou Tengyue also purportedly has sold "dangerous analgesic chemicals often used as cutting agents that are mixed with synthetic opioids and other illicit drugs," according to officials.
