Senior citizens who fall victim to conmen must be paid a compensation of a minimum of 30% of the value of the jewels/cash lost by them or ₹5 lakh, whichever is lesser, from the Victim Compensation Fund if the police fail to trace the culprits and recover the valuables, the Madras High Court has suggested.
Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy said, he had suggested only a bare minimum amount and the Tamil Nadu government could fix even a higher compensation since it had become common for the elderly to get conned either at the residence or in public places such as banks, ATMs, markets and hospitals.
