Texas police are investigating after an 11-year-old boy was killed during an apparent doorbell-ringing prank.
Homicide detectives with the Houston Police Department said in a statement the boy was running from a house after ringing the doorbell just before he was shot near the 9700 block of Racine Street on Aug. 30. The boy, who has not been identified, died on Aug. 31.
A man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting, according to CNN and ABC News. USA TODAY has reached out to Houston police and prosecutors for more information.
There have been at least two other shootings this year tied to a TikTok social media trend in which participants ding, dong, ditch – ring a doorbell and flee.
Earlier in August, a Texas man was arrested for aggravated assault after police said he fired multiple times at a vehicle with three teenagers inside who admitted to doorbell pranking at the man’s house in late July.
