A stag party reveller who crashed out after a boozy bash in a South African game reserve got a rude awakening as he was dragged out of his tent by two hungry hyenas.

Nicolas Hohls, 27, had his leg and head gripped in the jaws of a pair of the powerful carnivores and screamed as they tried to pull him into the dark to eat him.

The terrified farmer said he went from fast asleep to fighting for his life in a fraction of a second as the snarling beasts began shaking him like a rag doll in a huge blur of fur.

Married Nicolas reacted immediately to the scavengers and pushed his hand down the throat of one hyena and jammed his thumb into the eye of the second.

His screams alerted his father Colin at the Cape Vidal Nature Reserve in St Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal Province who came running with a torch to his stricken son's rescue.
