Police have reopened an investigation into the murder of a 10-year-old boy whose body was found mutilated and burned in a sack in a river in Belfast 52 years ago.

Schoolboy Brian McDermott disappeared from Ormeau Park on Sunday, September 2, 1973, and never made it home for his dinner.

His remains were discovered in the River Lagan almost a week later, near the Belfast Boat Club.

No one was ever convicted of his killing and the murder case has remained open for more than half a century.

Now police have launched an appeal to members of the public asking for information relating to his death.
