U.S. Open

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. — Coco Gauff’s U.S. Open ended just as she had warned it might. On an error-strewn afternoon of struggle on her forehand, the first shot she and everyone else learned as a child and one of the two most important shots in tennis, Naomi Osaka beat her 6-3, 6-2.

The other one wasn’t great either during a duel between two multiple Grand Slam winners and former U.S. Open champions, who for the moment are headed in opposite directions on their missions to fix the fundamental flaws that have prevented them from being the players they want to be.
