They depict the same subject and are similarly easy on the eye.

But whilst one is definitely the work of Dutch master Johannes Vermeer, the other was decades ago concluded to be an inferior painter's copy.

Now, Vermeer's celebrated work, titled The Guitar Player, is being displayed alongside the alleged imitation for the first time in more than 300 years.

The other work is nearly identical to Vermeer's 1672 masterpiece, depicting the same scene of a young woman with her guitar sitting in front of a landscape painting.

But subtle differences include the absence of ringlets in the girl's hair in the lesser-known work, which unlike the original is not signed by Vermeer.
