Leaving the European Convention on Human Rights would not jeopardise the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland, according to a major new report today.

Supporters of the Strasbourg court have long claimed that quitting the ECHR would undermine the landmark agreement that brought an end to the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Last week, Downing Street said the potential threat to the Good Friday Agreement was so grave that it was 'not serious' to suggest leaving the ECHR.

But a new report today by the centre-right Policy Exchange think tank argues that the peace deal is not reliant on membership of the ECHR and could be kept in place by strengthening domestic law.

It says claims that quitting the Strasbourg court would wreck the Good Friday Agreement are 'entirely groundless'.
